We have all experienced not making it to the finish line when we have set goals for ourselves. What happened? Many times, we make an excuse to justify not making it, or sometimes things came up to throw us off track and we never got back on.
Think about Olympic athletes, do they just wake up one day and say, “I think I will compete in the Olympics this year.” I don’t think so, they have worked hard most likely for years getting mentally, emotionally and physically prepared.
Often when we set a goal in front of ourselves that requires change, we look at it in a negative way. Such as a weight goal, we feel we need to give up or get rid of something in order to reach the goal. Instead if we put a positive thought to our goal like, “I’m going to be healthier and have more energy” we will be more likely to stay committed to it.
Here are five things people do to themselves that will cause them to not reach their finish line:
Not make a serious enough commitment. They do not think through the tough stuff before beginning the challenge.
Procrastination and excuse making. This is the most common reason. Negative self-talk.
Being vague about what you really want. “I want to lose weight versus I want to lose 5 pounds in 6 weeks.”
Not setting up a tracking and reminder system. Check in with yourself every day to see if you stayed true to your goal.
Turning slip-ups into give-ups. Everyone slips up. Don’t allow this to stop you, just start again tomorrow, it’s okay.
We all do these types of things to ourselves and by realizing and recognizing that we are doing them we can then begin to work to get over them and continue to head to our finish line.
Nothing builds self-esteem and self-confidence like accomplishment. ~ Thomas Carlyle
