“Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there” ~ Will Rogers
If you are in management it is a good practice to take time for reflection at the end of the day to see how well you manage your team. There is always room for improvement, if you do not think so ask your subordinates, you are probably in for a surprise. By reflecting on your management skills on a daily basis, preferably at the end of the day, it will allow you to see clearer what you did that was good and how you may have done some things differently. When you wait until someone has brought something to your attention you may not remember the situation as it really was. You might want to think of it this way; you are a coach and your staff is your team and at the end of each game you have a post game review to see what you did that didn’t go well and how you might have handled certain plays differently. Being in management an ongoing learning lesson everyday, and no two days are the same when you are working with people. Managers need to be on their toes and keeping their management skills sharpened, constantly learning from their positive outcomes and negative. Successful managers are always learning and adding to their management skills, not sitting on the tracks waiting to be hit by the train in order for them to get moving forward. Take some time for reflection today when the workday is done, maybe on your drive home to think about what went good today and what didn’t and what you might have done differently to make a difference. You team will appreciate your forethought and will respond positively to it.
