Have you ever stopped to think about what really matters to you personally at work?  What are the top things that are on your “must be there” list when taking a job?  We all know that we are very fortunate to be employed, but what is it that we are looking for that will keep us interested in our job, make us good employees so we continue to stay employed?  With over 50% of Americans dissatisfied with their current jobs, what are the things we can look for and cultivate  in our place of work to make ourselves in the 50% who enjoy their job?  There are seven important factors that can make us really connect with our job/employer/co-workers and if you can meet these foundational blocks you have a great chance at being very satisfied with what you do each day at work.

1. To be able to enjoy who you work with.  Being able to have small talk with co-workers, smiling at each other, acting friendly and being helpful to one another. Taking the time to care for who your co-workers are.

2. Being valued by our employer and those you work with.  Having respect for one another.

3. Receiving fair compensation for the job that you do.

4. Having the opportunity to receive continuing education and training in your field.  Employees feel valued when their employer invests in their education to allow them to become more competent and have skills to do a better at their job each day.

5. Having a job where you truly can enjoy being there even if you have task that are not so enjoyable.  Just knowing what you do is meaningful work to others and allows you to find energy, creativity and passion about your work tasks.

6. At the end-of-the-day, you have self-satisfaction about what you have accomplished and why.  There is nothing better than knowing you did a good days work for your employer and it was appreciated.

7. This is the BIG one and it really is tops on the list…working with and for people with ethics and integrity, who provide high, quality standards to those they serve.

Take a look at your job to see how it measures up in your eyes, if you are a little short, what is it that you can do to make it better?

If you have more to add to the top 7 just post them for others to see.
