This morning when I was in the grocery store looking for birthday cards and as I was reading through them a young father with his baby girl came up next to me to also look at the cards. As I turned to look at this cute baby she gave me the biggest smile, you know the one when their eyes twinkle, she was smiling from ear-to-ear, and immediately smiled back, I couldn’t help myself it was an instant reaction. The babies’ father looked over at us and he too began to smile after looking at his daughter smiling, then another woman came down the aisle and looked over and also started smiling and stated to the baby “what a pretty smile you have,” and she did. Smiling has so many good benefits for us, for instance, with this baby, she caused three adults to smile and feel good just by her little smile. Studies have shown that when you smile your body releases endorphins. These are brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters, which make us feel happy. They also are a natural pain and stress reliever. Smiling also can lower your blood pressure and change your mood from sad to happy. In our busy work lives we sometimes forget what a difference we can make each day just by smiling at those we come in contact with. Give it a try tomorrow and see how many people you can get a smile out of by giving them a smile first. You will be doing something healthy for yourself and those you encounter.
