Whenever you try something new that you never thought you could do it makes you feel really good inside.  I remember a few years ago when I went to Kauai and tried snorkeling for the first time I was amazed that I did it and survived.

First of all I am not a water person and I went on this boat that took us out to a cove to swim with the fish. My stomach was turning the whole time we were heading out to the site and I kept saying to myself “you can do this, they wouldn’t bring all of these people out here if it wasn’t safe.”

When the boat stopped I thought my heart would do the same, but I got up and went to the front of the boat to put on my floating jacket and gear and I jumped into the water! It was really cool, all of the beautiful fish and a sea turtle that I would have missed seeing had I not pushed myself to try this experience.

The same type of thing can happen to us in the workplace, where there are other tasks that we may want to try, but are not sure if we would be good at doing them.  We decide that it is better to keep on doing what we have been doing instead of asking if we could get additional training in a new area to try something else.  We never will know what talents we have unless we do try new things to see how we like them.

As an employer or office manager it is good to continually ask your staff if they would like to “spread their wings” and try new things.  By doing so it can create a sense of excitement about their job and new possibilities for advancement.  But remember just because you try something new doesn’t mean that you will have a talent or desire to continue to do it, I found that out in my snorkeling experience.

Though I felt good and proud of myself for trying it, I also found that it is not something that I have a passion to do, although I might do it again.  You never know what hidden talents you may find unless you take the chance to explore.
