A couple of physician friends of mine, Drs. John Guiliana and Hal Ornstein, wrote an article recently titled “Put the P into Persistence.”
One definition of persistence is; “to be determinedly repetitious, insistent, or tenacious.” With the pressures and stress that we encounter daily at our workplaces it is very easy to become discourage and disenchanted with trying to move ahead and challenge the unknown.
In their article Drs. Guiliana and Ornstein state: Persistence is the ability to look for solutions, the ability to continually move forward, and the ability to maintain your perspective while confronting the challenges we face in the workplace today.
These two physicians have come up with a list of ideas on how to use persistence to seek solutions to not only workplace issues that you may face, but how you can be persistent in achieving personal goals and dreams.
There is no substitute for working hard. No get rich scheme, no easy street. You must work hard.
Do not allow small failures to block your persistence. Successful people know how to fail.
Quiet the voice of resistance. Fight that little voice you have that wants you to stay in your comfort zone.
Be inspired by role models. Model yourself after those that inspire you.
Get a supportive group of friends. Being around others that are working on their dreams is helpful.
Get a mentor. Someone who has a good track record and who is willing to share and listen.
If you have to, hire a coach to pace you while you are working on your dream. Working with a motivational coach will help you identify your obstacles and find creative ways around them.
Practice Visioning. Keep your mind focused on your dream, goal and the future.
Each day get one step closer. Ask yourself at the end of the day, am I closer to my dream than I was this morning?
Few of us will ever obtain success without the quality of persistence. Visioning is keeping your mind focused on the desired dream or future.
Remember what Walt Disney said? “If you can dream it, you can do it.”
