Today is Independence Day here in the U.S., commonly known as the 4th of July. It is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

People here in the U.S. celebrate today with parties, barbeques, fun and games. The evening usually brings on Firework shows in most neighborhoods and cities.

This morning when I thought about it being Independence Day, I thought about how we as individuals could celebrate our independence as humans. Even though one may be in a position of not having total freedom, there are somethings that just cannot be taken away from us unless we give it away.

To name a few;

  1. Our attitude, we choose it and no one can make us change it. It is ours and only if we choose will it change.

  2. Our thoughts are all our own, we can think whatever we want and no one even knows, it is our mind’s personal freedom.

  3. Our choice to believe as we choose, even though others may think they have changed our choice of belief, they cannot. It is ours alone.

These are just three of the many ways that we have independence. Below are a few of my favorite quotes that support them.

“The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself” ~ Michel de Montaigne

“True independence and freedom can only exist in doing what is right” ~ Brigham Young

“To find yourself, think for yourself” ~ Socrates

Have a wonderful Independence Day, you can celebrate your freedom to be you!
