Employees who value those they work with and for are like rare jewels and a lucky find. These employees seem to be able see the big picture of what their company’s vision is and why what they do is so very important to it.
They also understand that each person who works for the company has a position that is as valuable as theirs. They have all-for-one and one-for-all attitudes.
They take the time to earn respect from their co-workers and from the start they show respect to everyone they work with. Respect is the essential ingredient in creating a workplace environment where employees value each other.
From the day you are hired you should always demonstrate respect for your boss and co-workers. You may not know them, and they may not show respect to you right away, but do not let that matter.
Showing respect goes a long way in earning respect. Below are a few ways that we can show respect to those we work for and with.
Make a big effort to be kind and friendly. Being friendly breaks the ice quicker.
Never partake in gossip; that also means not listening to it. Either change the topic or excuse yourself to go back to work.
When speaking to others, maintain eye contact and show genuine interest in what is being said. Being distracted and not paying attention to co-workers when they are speaking to you is disrespectful and hurtful.
Make sure you do what is expected of you at work. You will lose respect or never gain it by being a slacker.
Accept the different personalities of your co-workers and learn to understand them better. (There are a lot of good resources on understanding personality types that can be very helpful).
Here are a few ways you can earn the respect of your co-workers:
Do your job well and be polite.
Do not burden co-workers with your personal problems.
Do not talk about controversial topics that may offend others, i.e., religion, sexual preference, or political issues. Be sensitive to other’s beliefs.
Do not talk unfavorably about co-workers or your boss to other co-workers.
Leave salary out of all conversations.
If you need help ask for it, but do not overburden co-workers with tasks that belong to your job position.
Desire to be an awesome employee who shows and elicits respect from those you work with. Be an employee that contributes positively to the work environment every day and desires to make it a place where all employees enjoy working together.
