There is something good to be said about celebrating different Holidays or seasons at work. Doing something a little different can be exciting and motivating to the work team and allows for a different atmosphere to be created while doing something fun, yet remaining professional. Every year our office really decorates for Halloween, it is a time that most people accept as a fun Holiday, it allows us to be creative, let our hair down a little and to do something out of the normal. For the past 12 years our office staff has come up with different themes for Halloween, and on the day of celebration our doctor comes in and has no idea of what the theme is or what he will be dressed up as.
Now, since he is 6′ 4″ we decided from the beginning that he would make an awesome female character, so each year our theme is centered around him being a famous female. To give you an idea of what I mean, one year we dressed him as Cruella Deville and we were Dalmatian puppies, then he was Goldilocks and we were the three bears, he was also Snow White and we were the dwarfs, Mother Goose and we were Nursery Rhyme characters, and he was Wonder Woman and the staff were all dressed up as Clark Kent. This year all of the females in the office (including our male doctor) were 50’s girls with poodle skirts and our male assistant was a 50’s nerd (see picture the big one in the middle is the doctor).
Doing this has become a tradition and believe it or not our patients love it and just make a point of stopping by to have their picture taken with the doctor, whether they have an appointment or not. It is hard to explain the fun, and uplifting atmosphere that this Holiday brings to us and those we serve. We will have patients ask 6 months in advance when our Halloween day will be so they can come by. Whether you are creating a tradition or just enjoying the Holidays with those you work with and your customers/clients, decorating and being a bit festive can really uplift the everyday routine of the office workplace.
Our patients have liked it so much that we have also made up a few holiday times of our own, like Pink Flamingo week, Life is a Jungle, and Everyday is Paradise. When our office is just normally decorated for a while our patients will ask us “so what are you decorating the office up like next, and when?” The link below is an article about celebrating Holidays at work and ideas of what you might want to do, I hope you enjoy it.
