Give The Gift of Listening

Busy as we may be at work we still need to make the time to connect with those we serve in our place of employment each day.  Far to often when patients or customers enter a place of business they feel like a number and not a human.  I am sure you have also experienced this type of transaction where the person whom you are standing in front of is just going through the motions of their job and you are just part of it.  Not to long ago I went to get a test done and the person who check me in just called my name and handed me a clipboard and stated “fill out the form and give it to the technician when your name is called.”  She sounded robotic and did not even make eye contact with me, I thanked her and said her name (as it was on her badge), she just looked at me with one eye and went on with her business.  It left me wondering what was really going on with this person to be so distant from the people she was serving.  Taking the time to listen to others is a gift we can give to those we serve and in today’s world of quick service it is becoming a lost “art.”  A patient shared with me the other day about how he didn’t even think his primary doctor would recognize him on the street because every time he goes to see him, his head is down in the chart, and he is in and out of room within three minutes and this is the person who he is trusting to make correct medical decisions for him.  His statement is one that we all should take heed to as a reminder of how we need to take those moments that we have with those we are serving and truly make a point of “being there” by making eye contact and actively listening, it will make a huge difference to our patients/customers and they are “free gifts” that we can give them to make their visit with us something special.
