Have you ever tried to say something only to have it misunderstood? Not only did it get misunderstood, but when you tried to re-explain what you meant the situation got worse.
Communication is such a tricky thing and even when we put our best foot forward it can end up in our mouth.
Sometimes it is just best to step back, be quiet, and think about what you are trying to convey. Could it be stated more clearly or possibly even better in writing?
When having a conversation with someone and it is just not going well, it is okay to tell them that you want to rethink what you are trying to convey and will get back to them later.
Maybe, you will find it isn’t what you did or did not say that caused the confusion, possibly the person you were having the conversation with was not fully listening and that was the issue.
Whatever, the case may be it is always better to back up, regroup and then re-attempt to communicate your point.
Speak clearly, if you speak at all; carve every word before you let it fall” ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
