It is inevitable that our practices will run behind at times, but should it be a constant given that they always run that way? There are many times that we have no control of what type of problem may walk in our door that will set us back and we play the catch up game. But if your office is always running behind there is a problem and you need to do some research to find out what is causing it. Listen to your patients, do hear them always complaining that they are never seen on time. You the physician may not hear it from the patients, but you do from your staff because they hear the complaints. Keeping to the schedule is hard because we are not just seeing patients, we have a ton of other things to do that go along with seeing the patients. In our office there are times we get frustrated with our physicians because they are running behind again and when I take a good look at the schedule (that the staff made) and see that there is no way the physicians could possibly see and take care of that many patients in the given amount of time. Was that the doctors fault? No, the scheduling staff can either make or break your day and your office reputation for running efficiently. We must take the time in our busy day to sit down and discuss “realistically” how many patients can the physicians actually see in the day and what types in order to be able to schedule accordingly so we can run more efficiently. Ask questions like, do we have the right number staff to see this many patients, or do we have enough treatment rooms to get this many patients in and out in a timely fashion? By taking the time to examine how many patients you actually can see in the time you have you will be able to get rid of “the chronic running behind syndrome”, not that it won’t happen, but it won’t be a daily issue. The whole office will rejoice in that.
