When talking to a young business owner recently she told me that she was frustrated at how hard it was to own a business, run a business and oversee employees who worked in her business. She thought it would be easier. One of her biggest frustrations was employees and the lack of their doing the job she “expected” of them.
There are layers that need to be peeled back in this situation to look at it realistically and then begin the repairs necessary to move the business forward. But one of the biggest things that is stopping the progress is that the business owner is looking at the situation as a failure instead of looking at it as a learning experience.
Whenever we do something that does not work out if we can take what we did learn and then try again we will be moving forward. I’m not saying this necessarily easy, but it is true and the only way to ultimately be successful at what you want to achieve.
The “School of hard knocks” is one of the best educational teachers we have. I think Randy Pausch, author of the “Last Lecture” said it best in the quote below.
“Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted. And experience is often the most valuable thing you have to offer.” ― Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture
