During our current working conditions and so many people being laid off, I have found several employers that are “Essential” who had to furlough employees a month or so ago and now are ready to open their business to some extent, that are finding their employees do not want to come back to work.
Some are due to health issues, others because they do not have childcare, but there are some employees that have found benefits of being furloughed that make coming back to work less attractive at least for the time being.
This brings up the question, “Does employee loyalty still exist today?” Many employers doubt that it is possible to create employees that are dedicated enough to stay around for more than a few years.
This may be true for some employees due to being in school, others moving out of the area and then there are those that are working on a home business hoping it will become a full-time venture in the future.
Employers are concerned about having dedicated employees as well as the costs of investing in employees. Their hope is that the employees are going to be there for a long time and the odds are they may not.
While hiring employees for life is not a reality for the most part there are a few things that employers can do to cultivate “employee dedication” to them and their business while they are employed.
This check list, if used, will show your employees that you care and value them. They in turn will appreciate you, their employer and be more dedicated to their job while they are employed.
Get to know your employees as people you care about.
Take the time to listen to them.
Be available for them.
Handle mistakes fairly.
Implement ideas that they have.
Notice when they do something good.
Invest in training for them.
Create a pleasant appearance of their workplace and space.
Along with providing the above, there are three main reasons that employees will leave an employer:
Lack of faith in management or vision of the company.
Concerns with the way the employer or management treat people.
Lack of employer or management support and Leadership in areas of performance reviews, employee development and education.
The time we are living in does present challenges for employers with longevity and dedication of employees. With an employer’s dedication and Leadership to their employees and providing the above they will have a better chance of creating loyal employees. And you never know they might create employees that will want to stay with them for a long time.
Take care and care for those that care for your business 🙂
