The Holiday season is rapidly approaching and with it comes the hustle and bustle of shopping. This is either a joy or dread to people depending on where they are at in their personal life and how they view the Holidays.
When I was in high school I worked in a toy store during the Christmas Holiday season. I will never forget the rudeness of the customers as I tried to help them get the items that were on their children’s Santa lists.
Although many of the encounters were unpleasant I learned valuable lessons from that job. I promised that I would never be rude to sales people, ever, and I would never go Christmas or other shopping when I was on a tight schedule.
When Christmas shopping we should try to make each encounter with sales people a pleasant one. We need to realize this is their job and they are there to serve the customers that come to their place of business.
I have found in the past when I am shopping and there are lines and crowds I try to make small talk with those around me. This seems to lighten the stress that some people are feeling.
I will mention how difficult it must be for the sales people when they encounter people who are rushed and rude. Many of the sales force are young workers (possibly their first job) and have not received training on how to handle crowds of customers or rude ones.
Each one of us can make a difference this Holiday season when we are out shopping. We can bring a smile to the sales people by being friendly and understanding. We also can be examples for those that are in line behind us as to how they should act.
What things have you found to do that help in this busy season that will make a fellow worker’s life easier and fun when they are at work and encounter not so nice customers?
