Does employee loyalty still exist today?  Many employers doubt that it is possible to create employees that are dedicated enough to stay around for more than a few years.

According to Future Workplace “Multiple Generations @ Work”, ninety-one percent of the Millennial generation (born between 1977-1997) is expected to stay in a job for less than 3 years.  That would mean they will have approximately 15-20 jobs over the course of their working life.

No wonder employers are concerned about having dedicated employees as well as the costs of investing in employees.  Their hope is that the employees are going to be there for a long time and the odds are they may not.

Employers are realizing that the days of hiring someone for their lifetime are gone.  But there are a few things that can be done to make the employees they have more dedicated to their business while they are employed.

This check list, if used, will cause employees to appreciate their employer and become more dedicated to their job while employed.

  1. Create a pleasant appearance of their workplace and space.

  2. Get to know your employees more personally.

  3. Take the time to listen to them.

  4. Be available for them.

  5. Handle mistakes fairly.

  6. Implement ideas that they have.

  7. Notice when they do something good.

  8. Invest in training for them.

Along with trying to keep employees by doing the above, there are three main reasons that employees will leave an employer:

  1. Lack of faith in management or vision of the company.

  2. Concerns with the way the employer or management treat people.

  3. Lack of employer or management support in areas of performance reviews, employee development and education.

The time we are living in does present challenges for employers with longevity and dedication of employees. With an employer’s dedication to their employees and applying the people skills above, they will have a better chance of creating loyal employees.  They could also possibly create employees that will want to stay with them for a long time.
