Today’s post is authored by my good friend and co-worker Jesus Vazquez. Mission statements are not just for companies. As you will hear from Jesus, creating a personal mission statement helps you to define what your purpose is.

Ciao!

You need a personal Mission Statement.

Do you have a written mission statement for your personal life? If not, today is the day you should write your own mission statement for your personal life.

The companies in the top Fortune 500 have mission statements. These statements range from a few sentences to a paragraph. Take for example the next two companies ranked in the top Fortune 500 for 2013, and read their mission statements.

Walt Disney: “…to develop the most creative, innovative and profitable entertainment experiences and related products in the world.”

Home Depot (List of 8 core values): “taking care of our people; giving back to our communities; doing the right thing; excellent customer service; creative shareholder value; building strong relationships; entrepreneurial spirit; respect for all people.”

Think of a mission statement as a paved roadway. It will help guide your actions in life, both for your personal and professional life. Your mission statement will give you a vision for how you life should look like. For the two companies above, their mission statements are a true reflection of their current status. They are fulfilling their mission statements because every action is in alignment with their mission statements.

“A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.” ~Rosabeth Moss Kanter.

By developing a personal mission statement you will be paving the road that leads to a better self. In this manner you may think of developing both a personal and a professional mission statement.

You should start by envisioning of how you see a better version of you, what does that individual look like, what action does this person take, and what values are of importance to this envisioned image of yourself.

Once you develop your own mission statement print it out and post it in various visible places for you to have as a reminder. Ensure that you think about your actions, and whether this actions are in alignment with your new mission statement. If any action conflicts with your mission statement, reevaluate this action for it will lead you off the “roadway” to achieving the life you envisioned for yourself.

Go create your own mission statement.
