It is said that Washington Redskins, 22-year-old, quarterback, Robert Griffin III, was born with the leadership gene. He apparently inherited this gene from his father, Robert Griffin Jr., who enlisted in the Army at 18 and rose from private to staff sergeant, a promotion of five ranks in his first year as an artillery man.
Robert Griffin III, has an incredibly inspiring story and his leadership skills are proof that it is his calling. The amazing part is that he is only 22-years-old and his skills are that of a seasoned leader.
I follow football somewhat, and had heard about this young superstar, but did not know much about him until my Aunt sent me an article that appeared in the Washington Post recently. (see link below for article in full)
Not only is Griffin humble, but he leads his team with inspiration, passion, grace and mercy. As told in this one story:
Griffin lead the Redskins on a potential game-winning drive and in the final minutes that flamed out, wide receiver Josh Morgan threw the ball at an opponent, drawing a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. As the final seconds counted down on this crushing loss, Morgan sat alone on the Redskins’ bench, with his teammates staying far away – until Griffin came over, patted him on the head and whispered something in his ear.
“He just told me to keep my head up and keep going,” Morgan recalled. “Yeah, it did mean a lot to me. He didn’t have to do that.”
Griffin didn’t do it to prove his leadership skills. Few people even saw it happen. He did it because he thought Morgan could use a lift, because he would need Morgan’s confidence again later, because he felt it was the right thing to do.
Robert Griffin III, has won the heart of his team and not because he told them he was their leader. He won it because he came onto the team as a rookie and demonstrated his leadership abilities from leading by example.
This is a great article about an inspiring young leader. I look forward to hearing more about him in years to come.
