I was reading a post the other day by Martin Webster titled “Top 5 Questions Great Leaders Should Ask Their Teams.”
This really got me thinking, as it has been a long time since I actually asked my team how I was doing as a leader. I think I am doing pretty well, and I have good relationships with my teammates.
But having good relationships does not mean there are things as a manager that I could be doing better to meet the needs of my team.
Questions like “What should I do differently?” can be intimidating to ask because we might not like the answers that are given, then what? Questions like this deal with us personally and that can be make us uncomfortable.
On the other hand asking questions like “What can we do better?” is much easier as it takes the focus off of the leader and puts it on the team as a whole. I can handle that question without a problem.
Martin states that great leaders should ask their teams searching questions, if you do not, you will never know what they think or how you could improve as a leader for them.
It may be uncomfortable to do but I am sure the lessons that can be learned will be worth it.
