Start the week out right by taking a few minutes to think of how you might be a better, co-worker and employee. Taking the time to ponder these three questions will get you headed in the right direction.
1. Do you fully understand your role at work?
Now you might think this is a dumb question because you know what you were hired to do, but do you know how your role affects the business as a whole? For example, your job is the front office receptionist and your two main duties are to answer the phone and greet people as they come into your office. This sounds pretty easy, but the difference in the impact you could have on the business as a whole is pretty big. If you answer the phone in a monotone voice that was short and curt and you sound uninterested to customers, how will they think of your business? Versus if you answer the phone with a smile on your face, that they can hear, and a cheery voice that is more than willing to help them with whatever it is they need. Or if you are at the front desk and your clothing is wrinkled and your hair unkempt what are your customers impression of you going to be? And these impressions carry over to what they will think of the business as a whole. How will your boss or co-workers think of you, remember you are a representative of the company, . Whatever position you have at your place of business make sure you fully understand what it is that is expected of you and how what you do affects those you work with and those you serve.
2. Do you understand the main objectives of the business you work for? Every business has its goals and objectives, make sure you know what they are and how what you do plays into meeting them. If you work in a fast food business your goal would be to get customers their orders fast, correct and on their way, but what is it that you do that helps make that happen? If you do not know what exactly the objectives are for your business, then ask, by not knowing you are just a player in a game to which you do not know the rules to and what fun is that. By knowing the business objectives you can be an active player in helping to reach them and that will make you enjoy your job much more.
3. Do you know how you can add value to your workplace? Think about what it is that you can do to make your workplace a better place for you, your co-workers, boss and those you serve. It could be something as simple as getting to work a few minutes early to make the coffee, or changing the water bottle, or picking up a mess that you didn’t make. By answering the first two questions and then acting on them you are already ahead of the game in adding value to your workplace. It is the little things that we can do each day to make others we work with day at work better. There is magic to adding value to our workplace and that is that others will usually see what we are doing start doing the same thing! The other magic is that it just makes you feel good when you do something nice for others and know that it is just the right thing to do.
